Reef Health and the Aquarium Industry: How Aquariums Benefit Reefs

چکیده

Presented by Bruce Bunting, Vice President of the Center for Conservation Finance of the World Wildlife Fund at the Marine Ornamentals Conference, November 26 December 1, 2001, Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Coral reefs are among the biologically richest ecosystems on earth. They are a source of biodiversity, food, environmental protection, recreation, and potential medicinal products. Throughout much of the world, communities and governments are dependent on them for subsistence, jobs, products, and revenue. Tragically, as important as they are, coral reefs are also under an ever-increasing threat due to global warming, coastal development, destructive fishing practices, and other human-related activities.

Opportunities for public aquariums to increase the sustainability of the aquatic animal trade.

The global aquatic pet trade encompasses a wide diversity of freshwater and marine organisms. While relying on a continual supply of healthy, vibrant aquatic animals, few sustainability initiatives exist within this sector. Public aquariums overlap this industry by acquiring many of the same species through the same sources. End users are also similar, as many aquarium visitors are home aquaris...

Artificial Coral Reefs as a Method of Coral Reef Fish Conservation

2 Biodiversity is an important factor in all healthy ecosystems. Coral reef ecosystems support an incredibly diverse community of fish species. As coral reefs are in decline due to a combination of factors such as climate change and over fishing, the species which are being supported by the reef are at risk. In particular, coral reef fish communities have been shown to be in decline. Coral reef...

The effect of artificial reefs on fish assemblage versus natural sites in the Bandar Lengeh-Iran

Artificial reefs are used to compensate the destruction of marine ecosystems. In the present study, the effects of artificial reefs were compared to natural sites. For this purpose, five treatments including four different forms (Reef ball (R), Laneh Mahi (L), used materials (U) and R+L+U) of artificial reefs and one control were established. The reefs were deployed at Bandar Lengeh, the Pers...

The Persian Gulf is northern part of the ROPME Sea Area (RSA), and is semi-enclosed shallow sea which located in subtropical climate. Measuring is 1000km in length, varying in width 60-340km, and average depth is about 35m and maximum depth is 105m. This research was carried out during 2005-2010 for reviewing the corals status and determination of coral reef habitats distribution in the Persian...

Hydrodynamic Modelling of Coral Reefs:Ningaloo Reef-Western Australia

As with all coral reef systems, the ecology of Ningaloo Reef is closely linked to water circulation which transport and disperse key material such as nutrients and larvae. Circulation on coral reefs may be driven by a number of forcing mechanisms including waves, tides, wind, and buoyancy effects. Surface waves interacting with reefs have long been known to dominate the currents on many coral r...
